What does this tell us?
Unenthusiastically I agree – The Vick Effect or The Flutie Effect or whatever.
I started as a student at VT in ’75, received a couple of degrees, and was fortunate to stay at the university (teaching and research) for 34 years.
I loved VT football and still do. I’d cheat the Va taxpayers and slip off several late afternoons to watch practice during the Beamer era.
With the increased exposure/success of VT football, I witnessed an increase in the academic quality of students in the classroom. I used to tell the students that they were brighter than I ever hoped to be and with my ’75 grades and SAT scored, I would never be admitted to the ‘new and improved’ VT.
Admittedly I am weirdly wired and question every aspect of life, but the story revealed from the correlation of a sport and increase in student ‘quality’ never sit well with me.
